I had the wind knocked out of me earlier this week.
On Wednesday I left work to play a funeral, and then returned back to my computer job. I've done this hundreds of times. When I got home from my long day on Wednesday, I was throughly and completely exhausted. I pulled myself through work on Thursday, by Friday I was better - maybe back to normal.
My day on Wednesday started at 5:30 or so. When I first got up I did a few minutes of yoga, then I spent an hour or so reading Oldroyd's Technique & Spirit of Fugue, and worked a couple of the exercises. It took me probably 30 minutes or so to lay out music for the funeral. (The previous day I had talked to the surviving son - who had very specific ideas about music for the service. His mother was a pianist and he wanted only 'classical' piano music for the prelude. I decided to narrow this to Brahms' intermezzi & several single movements from Schumann. I took along the Chopin preludes just in case. I told him I would not play the postlude on the piano, but suggested Brahms' Herzlich tut mich erfreuen. He wanted a solo in the middle of the service, and I suggested playing one of my own compositions.) I made it to the church by 7:55 to practice. And I made it to my computer job by 9:30. I left work at 12:15 for lunch. I drove straight home and made a salad (poached egg & arugula) for lunch and laid down for at least 20 minutes before dressing and driving to the church. I started the service as soon as I got there. For some reason I found myself concentrating very intensely during the piano music. I don't play these pieces really at all any more, but have always found them easy to summon up when needed. I was told afterward by several people that they were all very moved. I didn't really miss anything - but it felt like I was slogging through a swamp just to get the notes out. I also found myself concentrating on the hymns on the organ - which was odd too. Everything went well - but felt like it didn't. I got back to work at 3:30 and worked til 6:00. The coding this week at work was very picky & intricate - but again, rather normal.
When I left work I went straight to Scott's with the new T-shirts and we had a nice evening.
By the time I got home at 9:30 or so, I felt rhinos had been sitting on my chest all day. I was truly tired.
