I'm kind of disturbed by
joncub's departure, like
low_fat_muffin's earlier in the year. It's hard to imagine investing so much time and energy, then suddenly abandoning it all.
I guess LJ is like a cocktail party. There are people who are open and friendly, there are others who are reserved. There are those that, no matter what you try, just seem to ignore you. There are those who want to make a big impression, and those who do make a big impression. There are those you stop and listen to, and those you pass by.
And those that when you turn around to speak have suddenly split without a word.

Perhaps all of the above should be in the past tense.
Oh well - I still don't think I can do Facebook. I opened it up this weekend to consider. As usual when I reached the privacy settings, I couldn't believe it. It depresses me that something so hacked together has practically conquered the world.

Date: 2011-06-27 03:05 pm (UTC)That's a nice thing about LJ. It seems like most on here only occasionally post a silly picture standing beside Niagara Falls (or whatever). And if they do, it's usually an interesting picture, or they have something significant to say about the moment or the place.

Date: 2011-06-27 04:36 am (UTC)Facebook is one-liners; LJ can be essays, even short stories. Facebook sabotages projets de longue haleine, denying to both writer and reader disciplined growth.
Think of what you described above as winnowing.

Date: 2011-06-27 03:01 pm (UTC)Of the people on my friends list, I usually remember where they live, but many times have only a vague notion of what they look like or how old they are. But that's not why I chose them. I chose them because they had something interesting to say. That kind of network actually suits me better than a long list of people who all me know me in disparate ways.
