I'm kind of disturbed by [livejournal.com profile] joncub's departure, like [livejournal.com profile] low_fat_muffin's earlier in the year. It's hard to imagine investing so much time and energy, then suddenly abandoning it all.

I guess LJ is like a cocktail party. There are people who are open and friendly, there are others who are reserved. There are those that, no matter what you try, just seem to ignore you. There are those who want to make a big impression, and those who do make a big impression. There are those you stop and listen to, and those you pass by.

And those that when you turn around to speak have suddenly split without a word.

– – –

Perhaps all of the above should be in the past tense.

Oh well - I still don't think I can do Facebook. I opened it up this weekend to consider. As usual when I reached the privacy settings, I couldn't believe it. It depresses me that something so hacked together has practically conquered the world.

Both Jon and Bob gave signs that they were leaving. Bob told me he was repeating everything here and on facebook so he decided to stick with facebook. But I do not think he realizes his post on LJ were much better thought out and expressive where facebook he is pretty much like everyone else, short and not really expressive at all but then maybe that is what he wanted in the long run. But it is too bad that those such as they do leave.

thought out and expressive

That's a nice thing about LJ. It seems like most on here only occasionally post a silly picture standing beside Niagara Falls (or whatever). And if they do, it's usually an interesting picture, or they have something significant to say about the moment or the place.

I'm not in a position to assess the "hacked-together" aspects of Facebook. Does it fill its niche only because it got there first?

Facebook is one-liners; LJ can be essays, even short stories. Facebook sabotages projets de longue haleine, denying to both writer and reader disciplined growth.

Think of what you described above as winnowing.

I think you're right.

Of the people on my friends list, I usually remember where they live, but many times have only a vague notion of what they look like or how old they are. But that's not why I chose them. I chose them because they had something interesting to say. That kind of network actually suits me better than a long list of people who all me know me in disparate ways.

I am still unnerved that people who are obviously intelligent choose Facebook over LJ. It can only be a numbers game because no one could claim it is content driven.

If I was paranoid it would make me wonder whether, if microchips were the basis of a new network, many would ultimately just follow the crowd.

John's not on facebook either, anymore, not that that helps.

That is a good metaphor, though.

I still can't be crazy about FB. But it's does work pretty well for keeping up with social events. It's just hard to catch up on the posts. It moves too quickly. I am staying with LJ, but I must admit that in the past few months I have been posting less, and catching up on others posts. Yes I always enjoyed [livejournal.com profile] low_fat_muffin's posts too.
