I went to visit my friend Scott Hyde for a little bit last night. He was a little spacey -- but it was still nice to see him.
For awhile now he has been trying to organize his photographs, prints, negatives, etc. He has been a professional photographer since the mid 40s - most of that time in New York. Something reminded him of a current stack of items -- the album covers that used his photographs. He showed me about 30 or 35 items - he hadn't located everything yet. In most cases he had a print of the photograph and a copy of the album. But for some he would only have a 'proof' from the recording company's art department, or just the album. In the late 50s, he had sold quite a few photographs to Columbia's art department - and they used most of them. The photographs are very typical of his work at that time -- they are experiments with cellophane and other materials and also lighting effects. They usually look like abstract paintings.
I especially liked a cover for a Charles Rosen recording of Stravinsky & Schoenberg. He had two copies of the proof, and he gave one to me. I really love it!
