I usually go to the Starbucks on I40, even though there is one closer by. It's on the poorer side of town, the boundary between the barrio and what might be called the W.T. part of town. It is heavily visited by travelers. The last unusual ones were a couple of California steroid bodybuilders giving their very miniature doggie a break in the small patch of grass.

The regulars include familiar Texas types but also lots of surprises. There is a growing Somali community close by, and this is their coffee shop. They usually dress for coffee -- their own spin on hip-hop. Rarely any bling, but cool hats, scarves, belts, and dashing shoes. The style is unusual on their thin frames, but they totally make it their own. The Somalis are usually men in groups, occasionally single. Infrequently on a Sunday, there will be a family - the women in even more colorful African garb.

It's also the place to see the teenagers from the Laotian & Thai neighborhoods (north of the barrio). They usually only come in the evenings. They have their own interesting outfits - t-shirts, jeans, headphones.

Today there was a barrio family of four, including a muy muy macho young dad with a broad felt cowboy hat & cowboy drag. His (maybe) four year old son donned the same hat. The son's energy was so completely given to emulating his dad, it was hard not to stare.

I read today more in the Einstein book (what a romantic period - the theoretical physics of the early XXth cent.), a Michel Houellebecq interview, and several poems. This morning I played one of the large Buxtehude praeludia in a minor key (nothing sounds better on my organ) & the familiar Wachet auf prelude of Bach. Finishing the day with an episode of Pimp my ride, it was, all in all, a good day.

Do you have a regular coffee shop?
